3.1How the section is built
General Training Reading has three sections and 40 questions in 60 minutes. The texts come from the kind of English you would meet in daily life: notices, advertisements, timetables, staff handbooks, company guidelines, newspapers and magazines.
| Section | Texts | What they are | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Two or three short texts | Social survival: advertisements, notices, timetables, instructions | About 14 |
| 2 | Two short texts | Workplace: job descriptions, contracts, staff handbooks, training material | About 13 |
| 3 | One long text | General interest: a magazine or newspaper article | About 13 |
The scoring warning again
Because these texts are easier than the Academic ones, the conversion is harder. You need 30 correct out of 40 for band 6, and 34 for band 7. Accuracy matters more than speed here. A student who finishes in 45 minutes with 26 correct scores lower than one who uses all 60 minutes and gets 31.
