Part 3ReadingSection 7 of 13

3.7Question type: sentence, note, table and flow-chart completion

You copy words from the text into a gap. The answer is always a word that appears in the text, and it must be copied exactly.

The method

  1. Check the word limit and write it at the top of the page so you keep seeing it.
  2. Read the whole sentence including what comes after the gap.
  3. Decide the grammar of the missing word before you search: noun, verb, adjective, singular, plural.
  4. Find the part of the text the sentence is based on, using the words around the gap.
  5. Copy the word exactly as it is spelled in the text. Do not change its form.
  6. Read the finished sentence back. If it is not grammatical, the answer is wrong.

Two rules students break constantly

First: you cannot change the word. If the text says decision and the sentence needs decide, the answer is not the question type you thought it was, so look again. Second: you cannot exceed the limit. Three words where two are allowed scores zero even if the meaning is perfect.
