2.3Question type 1: form, note and table completion
- 2 reading texts
- 10 marked questions
This is most of Recording 1, it is the easiest question type in the test, and it is where careless students throw away the most marks. You fill a gap in a form, a table or a set of notes.
The method
- Use the reading time. Read every gap before the recording starts.
- Predict the type of answer for each gap: a name, a number, a date, an amount, a place, a day. Write a one-word reminder above the gap.
- Read the words around the gap. Those words are what you will hear just before the answer, so they are your warning signal.
- Write exactly what you hear. Do not rephrase it and do not correct the speaker's grammar.
- If the speaker repeats or corrects themselves, the answer is the correction, not the first version.
- When the recording ends, check spelling, singular or plural, and the word limit.
The most common trap in this type
The speaker gives a piece of information and then takes it back. For example: the fee is three hundred dirhams, sorry, that was last year, it is now two hundred and forty. The answer is 240. Your ear catches the first number; the test rewards the student who stays with the sentence to the end.
Practice 1
Your teacher will read a telephone conversation once only. You have one minute to read the form first. Write the expected answer type above each gap before you listen.

Two of those questions, worked through
Step 1: The word AED is already printed, so the answer is a number only. Do not write dirhams.
Step 2: The words around the gap are monthly fee. Wait for the word month or monthly.
Step 3: The speaker says it costs two hundred and forty dirhams a month, or two thousand four hundred for the year.
Step 4: Two numbers are given. The question asks for the monthly figure, so 2,400 is the trap and 240 is the answer.
Step 5: Check the limit. One number, well inside what is allowed.
Answer: 240
Step 1: Street is already printed after the gap, so the answer is the name of a street, which means a proper noun.
Step 2: Proper nouns in IELTS are either spelled out or made very clear. Get ready to write letter by letter.
Step 3: The speaker says the main gate closes after nine, so use the side entrance on Wasit Street.
Step 4: Write WASIT in capitals so there is no question about the first letter.
Warning: do not write WASIT STREET. Street is already printed, and repeating it may push you over the word limit.
Answer: WASIT
