5.7Practice questions

Write each of these in 40 minutes, by hand, with a timer. Plan for five minutes before you start writing.

  1. Some people think that young people should be required to do unpaid community work. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  2. In many countries, people are working longer hours than in the past. What are the causes of this, and what effects does it have?
  3. Some believe governments should spend money on public transport rather than on building new roads. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
  4. More and more people are choosing to live alone. Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
  5. Many young people leave their home towns to find work in large cities. What problems does this cause, and how could they be reduced?
  6. Some people think that examinations are a poor way of measuring what a student has learned. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
